Established in San Francisco in 2000, ib+a's foundation is the 35 years of international and multi-faceted design experience of its senior principal, Ian Birchall, AIA RIBA. The initial focus of the firms work has been in privately financed multi-family housing, and as the firm grew, the project types expanded to include destination retail, senior communities and mixed-use urban projects in the Central Valley and Southern California.
More recently, the firm has been commissioned to design affordable housing, schools and custom residential interiors.
process As architects working primarily in urban context, our goal is to create beautiful and sustainable additions to the built environment that surpass our clients' goals and expectations, and are welcomed by their neighbors.
For each project, ib+a takes the clients' programmatic and financial parameters, and forms them into an architectural response that is both contemporary and contextually responsive. Projects are designed by the principals as a team and remain under the direction of a principal through to completion.
The entitlement process for any project can be arduous and testing. Our considerable experience and success in managing our clients' projects through this process continues to bring referrals to the firm. Our preference is to work closely with local community groups and neighbors to ensure that our designs receive their support and pass through the entitlements process as quickly as possible.

Trained in England, Ian has more than 35 years of experience as an architect in the United States and the UK. As IB+A's founding principal and owner, Ian directs the firm as a whole and each of the offices project studio teams.
As a small firm, each client has the benefit of their project being led by a firm Principal, who stays with the project from pre-design to post-occupancy.
The firm is staffed with professionals who have seen their designs built, know the challenges of the design, entitlements and construction processes, and how to best help a clients' project become a success.
With each project, ib+a continues its passionate pursuit of innovative ideas, design excellence and exceptional service.

William's 15 year career has concentrated on the planning and design of residential projects, predominantly for urban infill sites in the Bay Area and Southern California. William is a Principal and lead designer at Ian Birchall and Associates.

sustainability In 1991, 3 years before LEED was founded, Ian Birchall's DC-based firm, The Birchall Design Group, received a commission to design " the most environmentally, ecologically and energy conserving house on Capitol Hill: a showcase for Senators to see what can be done" (John Hunting). This directive inspired first-principles research into unique and relatively untested systems, materials and methodologies. The complexity of the project forced it to become a design-engineer-build project for the firm, and, through hands-on construction management, the firm was able to build the renovation for 1/3 of the lowest bidders price.
The design transcended the then state-of-the-art, setting new benchmarks for inventiveness and sustainability in what is a veritable 'tour de force' of master building.
This project could never have been realized without the commitment, vision and faith of the client, Mr. John Hunting. Thank you, John.
Since that time, 20 years ago, the world's awareness of the problems of human consumption and waste has grown exponentially. We are now living in a time where sustainability is the core of a design process and not just a word with meaning but no intent. Sadly, there are just not enough John Huntings.

The finished building contained:
· rainwater collection and purification system used as a well for a geo- ....thermal water-source heating and cooling system- the cooling ...."tower" was a fountain in the rear garden
· warm-air collection and distribution/exhaust system (mechanical ....assisted heat-chimney)
· solar pre-heated domestic hot water
· solar-heated under-floor heating for the north side of the town house
· natural air-purification system based on NASA-developed systems
· X-10 based house-wide controls and system management (thank ...you Popular Science)
· rain-water pumped via PV-powered systems to flush toilets, to a rain-,,,water shower and the laundry
· citrus-based paints
· low-formaldehyde products
· composite decking system (Trex)
· cellulose insulation
· recycled roof framing members used to create Tatami room shoji ,,,walls
.. and last but not least. a worm drawer for composting kitchen waste!
