BART Canopy Oakland

This pro-bono project has been developed as a vision for what may be possible if the City of Oakland follows through on its plan to develop the downtown as a place to see and visit. Responding to both pragmatic and emotive needs, the concept provides both shelter and visual excitement, and through the use of suspended wide flat-screen displays, informs travelers of train schedules, and visitors of local events. Emphasizing the urban sculptural qualities of the design, flood lighting has been integrated into the silvery suspended glass structure to create both a sense of place and a sense of arrival.

Ian Birchall designed the architectural, structural, and lighting concepts of the project.
